Top 5 Tips for getting over Jet Lag/Travel Sickness

On the 30th October, The Boy and I departed the UK for the amazing island of Honolulu for our Honeymoon! This was the most beautiful 10 day trip and we had the most amazing time!

With this amazing holiday and all the fantastic memories we brought home with us, we also brought home with us a tone of Jet Lag.

Before we booked this trip, neither of us had any clue how long it would take to get there. From experience I can tell you that it takes 10 hour to LA, then another 6 hours to Honolulu.

I personally brought home some travel sickness this time as well, so we had the double whammy this trip!

So, how do you get over these lovely things? Here are my top 5 tips for getting over both Jet Lag and Travel Sickness:

Hydrate:

This sounds incredibly obvious, but re-hydrating your body is key to getting over any type of extended trip. This even includes after being in a car, bus, coach or even on a train for longer than 2 hours. The heaters/air conditioners still use recycled air, and will still dry you out like a raisin!

Hydration is not just about drinking a lot of water. Although this is the first thing you need to do, if you have been sick or feel nauseous, you need to get your salts and electrolytes back under control. It’s time to stock up on the mint tea and Dioralyte (this is a “rehydration therapy” that is mainly used during stomach upsets, however this can be used any time where extreme hydration is needed).

Turn your phone off:

Whilst catching up with everyone after your trip is so much fun. Past texting/calling you Mum or Dad to tell them you got home, everything else can wait!

Munching:

Now it’s time to eat!

Food is something that is key to getting back to normal! Even if you are not feeling very well, you need to much on a little something….I promise it will help!!

Personally I go for (yeast free) toast with nothing on it, or dry digestives. This sounds very boring, but when you have them with your mint tea, it makes you feel a little bit more “normal”.

Hydrate again:

Water, tea and rehydration therapy is not the only way to hydrate. You can also hydrate your body from the outside in.

After you take your “take the travel feeling away” shower, use your favourite moisturiser to cover yourself from head to toe, pop you PJ’s on and go to bed! If you have one, pop on an overnight mask or a thick layer of your night cream. This should stop any blemish flare ups.

Time to rest:

I appreciate that traveling usually involves us being sat on our butts for extended periods of time, however traveling is exhausting!

If jet lag is the issue, and you have a bit of time before you are back to your 9-5 I thoroughly recommend listening to your body and sleeping when you want on your first day home. This is the opposite of any advice you will usually hear but will be surprised how long you will sleep for, and how quickly you will get back onto your home time zone.

As soon as you can, take that shower, eat that toast, turn the phone off and rest!

To be honest, part of this jet lag recovery routine is part of my Sunday night…..adding any of this into your week will 100% help in getting back to normal!
