Is Self Care Self Indulgent or Selfish?

Looking after yourself is super important, we all know that, but are we going about the wrong way?

I have heard my fair share of conflicting views on self care and how often it “should be done” and how some things are considered too indulgent and boarder on selfish. To be 100% honest, I can see both sides but I do not feel like taking some time for your self is a bad thing…but if you store up all your daily self care needs into a once a month hit….it might seem a bit self indulgent.

So how often could you be “self caring” and what could you be doing? I have a few ideas……some self indulgent and some that could just be considered important for daily life:

Daily Self Care:

If you can carve out anything from 2 to 15 minutes, you can practice Daily Self Care without feeling like you are selfish or getting any grief from those around you.

My Daily Self Care moments look something like this:

A few moments to drink a beautifully crafted tea or coffee.

A full skincare routine.

An extra long shower…just because.

Weekly Self Care:

Self care on this level usually takes a bit longer, so it’s best to block between 1 and 3 hours. I know this means like a lot….but you might have saved up all your daily self care points…..or you might just need a weekly top up…..either is good!

My Weekly Self Care moments:

Full scrub down shower…..this sounds gross but I can only exfoliate my skin once a week otherwise it will fall out with me!

A manicure and pedicure session.

Yoga in the garden.

Monthly Self Care:

I applaud anyone who can wait to take some times for self care once a month. If you are really good and have not burner out by now…..it’s time for you to take at least a day to do as you please…you have earned it!

Monthly Self Care looks something like this:

A nice long drive.

A weekend with family and friends.

Hair cut and colour.

Dinner/Date night.

Friends night out.

I am super self indulgent and I do all of these things….daily, weekly and monthly purely because I enjoy them. It may seem like a lot, but self care….or just generally looking after yourself in ways that are nourishing your spirit are so important. I promise if you take the little bit of time, you will not regret it!

    Thank you for sharing..
    I would say you points/ actions are self-care for the outside but which difference makes it actually to what goes on in the inside?
    Making my pedicure etc will not help me to step out of my comfort zone, overcome my fears or grow.
    We shouldn’t be afraid at all to take time for us, it is not selfish, it is necessary.
    There is no one more important in your life than you and your inner peace. At the end, you are born alone and you will die alone.

      I understand your points, these things come to each of us differently. Taking that extra time to do something self indulgent can allow us to connect with ourselves on a more intimate level and allow us to grown and heal in different ways.
